About me

I love to create with seed beads with the addition of Swarovski crystal elements and/or vintage/antique glass beads.  My beaded jewellery pieces are sold through a variety of means such as my esty shop www.midesign.etsy.com my website www.sbj.com.au is just information and it also includes a gallery of my work. My work is available at the Incube8r Gallery, Mosman, Syndey. I have a massive collection of modern and vintage Swarovski crystal stones & beads and love bezzling Swarovski crystal stones.  Part of the adventure is sourcing the vintage Swarovski crystal elements as the journey can be quite exciting.  It is all done on the internet, usually items are sourced from America.  I design jewellery projects and write instruction tutorials for the bi-monthly magazine, Australian Beading.  I have been a regular contributor since April 2008.  I am totally in love with Swarovski and seek it out when ever I can, my all time favorite colours are Erenite, Golden Shadow and Padparadscha.

I am married to a wonderful man, Glenn and have two young sons, Ethan and Jake.  Ethan is 7 and is mildly autistic and has recently been diagnosed as having auditory processing disorder as well.  Jake is 5.  We recently moved to Brisbane, Australia from Melbourne, Victoria.. I am missing Melbourne terribly.  I am on Facebook and I have a Facebook page for my jewellery 'Social Butterfly Jewellery'.

Experience and Creativity

I am most proud of my competition entry pieces for this year Midnight Mistress to the Boudoir Beautiful European Contest; The Breast Cancer Journey, Firehorse, Tubastrea (all for the Open Division). Autumn Rose, I See You & Goliath (both cocktail rings). Bicone Bonanza & Sienna Rose (Creative Challenge Division) for the Create-Your-Style Australian Contest. * NewsFlash .. Tubastrea, Firehorse, Sienna Rose & The Breast Cancer Journey made it through to the short list judging finals.  My Beading Challenge entry for the Victoria Bead Societye's contest, was completed and submitted, however this entry along with my first entry in 2008 had 'mishaps'.  The 2008 entry was displayed upside down and missed the judges eye, my second entry was still in the box under the display table so who knows what happed with that one.  What I do know is that I will not waste my time, money or energy on an further entries to this beading challenge.  I purchased alot of beading kits this year. I have bought kits from both Laura McCabe (2 kits), Cynthia Rutledge (1kit) and Marcia DeCoster(5 kits) whilst I have not begun any of these they sit quietly waiting for me to get to them.  These will be a lesson in themselves and will expand my skills base.  I have been in love with beads and beading for the last 20 years but only really got into off loom bead weaving in the last 5 years.  I am largely self taught but have taken a class with Laura McCabe and two classes with Marcia Decoster.  I have a huge beading library in my studio.  I love my studio, it is my space, full of my beautiful beads, books and Swarovski crystals.

Hobbies and Interests

WIth out a doubt beading is my passion in life, am mad keen on all things vintage and use various vintage found objects in my designs.  I love to work with resin and have become quite proficient at using 2 part resin epoxy.  I am frequently commissioned by a handmade jewellery shop to complete projects for them with my resin experience.  I love collecting vintage and antique postcards, usually I have a digital copy of them and using Photoshop remove water marks, crease lines etc and 'restore' them digitally to use in my wearable art pendants created with polymer clay and resin.  I especially love it when there are words or dates on the reverse of the postcard.  The handwriting types from our past are very different to our modern way of handwriting.  Ah yes polymer clay is my other interest along with PMC (precious metal clay).  I love beading mags and beading reference books.  I have quite a 'large' library' of these sort of books. I adore vintage costume jewellery and love to research the designs.  Some of my fav jewellery designers are Hattie Carnegie, Kenneth J Lane, Chanel and Miriam Haskell to name a few.

Fields of Creativity

I really enjoy designing projects and writing the tutorials for Australian Beading and have done so since April 2008.  I teach bead weaving techniques privately now and again.  I hope when my children are older that I can do  more teaching as I really enjoy the classroom and spending time with people who want to learn.

Favorite Movies and Books

I am a fan of Audrey Hepburn and all her movies, what a special human being she was .. I miss her.  I loved the movie Pulp Fiction, Quentin Tarantino has an odd take on the world and movie making, having said that Reservoir Dogs just shocked me to my core, horrid movie.  I really enjoyed Avatar, what an exceptional flick that was, I saw it twice.  I don't really read anything except beading mags and beading reference books.  However, I do enjoy a good biography on certain people Nelson Mandela, Audrey Hepburn, Coco Chanel to name a few.
