Wire Twisting

Now, this is my first posting and I have a question.Smile I hope this is not a silly question!!!!Embarassed

I have been trying to make a necklace with wire, twisting the beads out from the main wire. I have seen this done in magazines. What I want to know is, do you have to make a plain necklace first and then embellish it?

How do you put clasps on the ends and how do you make it suitable for the wearer to be comfortable?Undecided

First question... what kind of "wire" are you using?

Never a silly question here!

It is really your own choice how you wish to make the necklace.  You can start with a simple wire choker style necklace that already has a clasp attached, and do your wire wrapping around it.  This might be the best way for you to start learning this technique.  Once you are comfortable with the twisting and can control the length, tension, etc. then you might want to try creating the necklace all in one.  A good tip I learned was once the necklace is made, then go back with the wire and wrap in between each "branch" to strengthen and stiffen the base.

You can wire on any style of pre-made clasp, or you can make a simple hook and eye clasp as a part of the wiring process.

I'll bet our other members have some tips on this technique, also, or maybe can recommend a book on this type of wire wrapping?  I can't remember seeing an article on the technique, I have just done it the same way you are doing it, Possum, from sight and instinct.

Sparkles and smiles,  Diane

Hi Possum

Is this what you're talking about?  Or something like it:

http://community.create-your-style.com/node/840

I made this years and years ago.  I made branches of crystals leaving long tails of wire - same technique as the Rossi-Frosted Branches above this post.  I then opened the wires and started winding a branch on each side of the 2 centre wide-apart wires - does that make any sense at all??  Thus using only the wires I used on the branches without having to use a thicker wire!

Yell if you need a better explanation and I will do my best to tell you!

Thank you all so much for

Thank you all so much for your help. Yes, the instructions for the frosted branches from Monica was what I was thinking. Thank you Jacky, what you said may just help and yes I did follow.

I have been using a size 28g wire. is that OK?

Wendy, I am not sure about the simple wire choker, how do I start that?

I love the idea of wire jewellery as it can be so beautiful and this is why I want to know what is the rtight way to do it to make a professional job.

Once again, thank you all for your fabulous comments.

wire gauge

What does everyone think?

28 gauge may be too thin unless the beads are light and small.

I usually use 26 or 24 gauge for twisting.

Wire Gauge

I generally use 26 or 28 guage.  28 generally tends to still hold up pretty well.  I use them when I create pieces with 4 & 6mm crystals.  Anything larger, I would definitely use the 24 or 26 Monica suggested.
