The criteria for any main stone or indeed any focus point of your jewelry should always be the beauty of the piece. All other parts of the necklace should either add to or help to add focus to your focal point, never to detract or focus attention away from it. Choosing colors, textures, or other features of other components can either complement or highlight something about the focal stone or piece -- occasionally contrast is interesting as well, but can be dicey unless very well chosen for balance of focus.
