Swarovski question

You experts out thereLaughing

I friend gave me a Swarovski fancy stone, rivoli, in exchange for some rare bicones. She convinced me that it is a size 18mm (VM) and is vintage. OK, I have fancy stones from all over the globe, and this one is larger than the 18mm`s I have, it measures 20mm. Now I need your help please! Is there such a size Swarovski rivoli or round fancy stone (pointed back and front). I am gonna meet up with her in a few hours` time, and I feel like giving it backTongue out if it is not real. Ah, she also told me it costed 6 Euros...way too much, but I can decide if I hear from you kind friends

thanx in advance

yes

I have had some also... the way to check is the fakes have a shine and somewhat sparkle  but do not dance...

swarovski  current after market coatings have a silver foil in the back. ( not coated by Swarovski)

the real swarovski stones have facets that dance.. and have gold foiled backs

20mm Rivolis

Sure, there are real Swarovski rivolis in 20mm - but they're not being currently produced. So I would venture a guess that it's Vintage.

Swaro only discontinued the larger sized (16 & 18mm) Rivolis a few years ago - RIGHT before the big Rivoli surge in popularity! They are still making 16 & 18mm, but only in a very few colors & effects.

However, any 20mm I have ever seen are quite old - usually in the old "K.S." Edelweiss packaging (older than the "D.S." ones). Post WW2 - pre-'70s, maybe? That's a pretty large window of time, I know - and maybe there ARE more recent packs of 20mms out there - I'm just going by the 20mm packages I have!

(admin - that's my big fantasy request - a chart or list that would help me determine just *how* old crystals are by their packages!)

I'm guessing your Rivoli has a dull gold foiled backing - kinda matte?

Sorry for the delayed response - I'm on the road, as always, and just was alerted to this question by Diane!

sorry for the late reply

have I understood you correctly? you would like to know, when certain products where launched and when they were (perhaps) taken out of programme?

Is there anybod else, who is interested in such a list?

YOU, are our most valuable source for information like this!!! What do you actually WANT? What do you like and what do you dislike? We VERY much appreciate your opinion! Thank you for your feedback!

I'd be!

I would be interested in a list admin! Always nice to know when something is available and ready to buy or not... or how old they are... when you buy from someone who isn't a BIG wholesale seller you know? like on ebay .. or in Zebra's case. To know we are getting the real thing! = )

There are probably a lot of lists though huh? so let's hear from other people on WHAT exactly we want to see... i think i'd like to see PENDANTS. because they're just too cool for words!

lol

interesting!

First of all, thank you Val and Diane, Betcey and Diane for sparing a while to answer my queation!!

I did reply to Val and Diane`s messages, but my reply just went woosh....spooky place, Sealednobody knows what happened to it Embarassed(that was too to say thanx!)

Betcey, what interesting info you have there! So infact the 16 nd 18`s are alse rare?! Why would you is that? On "my side" of the world, including Europe, the rivoli`s are very popular right now, I would say.

Tha back of the 20mm I have is compared to other sizes I have, a very similar gold foiling, but as you said, it might be a guess. Today I saw it has a flaw insideFrown...would not say nature`s fingerprints like in reall emeraldsTongue out Devaluation I guess....

Betcey, I follow you on your site, and even told Diane that you are off somewhereLaughing

Thanx and warm hugzz to you all

Rivoli Rivoli Rivoli!

Hi Zebra,

No, I wouldn't say that the 16 & 18mm Rivolis are rare - they *are* being produced today, and it wasn't long ago that they discontinued the colors - no more than 5 years ago, IIRC (but given that my brain falls firmly in the "vintage" classification, my memory could be off).

I remember getting the notification that all the colors were being discontinued (except crystal, crystal AB, Vitrail Medium and one or two other effects) and raising hell to my crystal rep (as if he had any say in the matter!). I told him to make sure his bosses knew that Rivolis were about to surge in popularity big-time (as if they would take my word for it, LOL!).

Keep in mind that right now, there are a lot of after-market effects being applied to the 16 and 18mms, so there are lots of colors out there that are in no way rare! Additionally, earlier this year, Swarovski did a small production run of a few colors - Amethyst, Aqua, Peridot, & Rose - in 18mm (or more likely, a big-time jewelry design company ordered a gazillion of them, and we're getting the leftovers). These all have a silver foil backing (not the shiny silver backing of the after-markets, like Valerie mentioned above, but a matte silver foil).

20mm, on the other hand - yeah, they're old! I can't remember them ever being in production in my 21 years of selling crystals, although I must admit to not being a Rivoli Whore (can I say that here?) until the last 10-12 years or so.

As for the flaw inside your stone - yep, it happens. Doesn't necessarily mean it's a fake. New or old stones, I've seen flaws in both - fortunately, not that often!

Oh, yeah . . . I luuuuuuuurve me some Rivolis!!!!!

;-D

Coming to you from the Comfort Suites in Columbia, Missouri . . .

why are the posts all out of order?

Why are the posts out of order? I'm confused!

Yes, yes, YES, Admin! I would LOVE to know more info about how to date vintage pieces. My customers ask me all the time, I am afraid I can only give generalizations.

For instance, from what years did Swarovski use the "swan" logo boxes and packaging? The Edelweiss "D. S. & Co"? The "K. S. & Co"? What packaging was used pre WW2? Post WW2?

I know the Aurora Borealis effect wasn't used until 1954. What about other effects, like VM & VL, Tabac, etc?

I have some old styles that aren't in any of my older Swarovski catalogs (although I admit, it never occurred to me to save the old books and catalogs until about 10-12 years ago. Why, oh why didn't I hang onto the ones I had 20 years ago?). How can I tell when they were produced?

Like Art. 5401, 5207, for instance. . . two of my all-time favorites.

Admin, can you find a resource that gives us that kind of information? If you can, you'll be placed on so high a pedestal you'll be dizzy!!!
