how do you name your design

Hello all,

I created this new topic just wanted to share and discuss how do you name your designs.

I use flower to name my designs or my collections all the time, such as Sakura, Mimosa, Vinca etc.

Best regards,

Katherine Song

Great Topic, Katherine

I'm not very creative when it comes to naming my pieces.  I tend to make the name descriptive, Cyrstal Bow Purse, Crystal Waterfall (2008 contest piece).  Color Chart was a fun name for me, it sounded better than crystal color cirlcles, and I named a bracelet Princess Margarita because I used Margarita beads, and I made up a whole story about an imaginary Princess.

Mel had a great story on her Oh Bee-Have necklace....

How does everyone else come up with names for their pieces....

Sparkles and smiles,

Diane

Katherine...

I name my pieces by where i'd wear it to. I made one set that looked like you'd wear it to walk on the beach. So i named it Down by the Shore... or Under the Sea. if it has a lot of blues. Something it reminds me of... a place, an event: Night on the town ... on the rocks ...

just some ideas... sometimes u have to wait until it comes to you... or someone else on here = ) they're are so many creative thinkers here ... gladly to help out

Naming Necklaces

I enjoy naming necklaces and I have to say that I generally create the necklace around the name. So a name or a phrase will come to me and then I'll set about designing the piece and buying the beads and components to compliment the name. When I made "Rapunzel" I knew I had to use golden shadow as it went so well with the theme. Also the beaded bra I made...well it came about from a photo of a zebra that I had taken, thus the" Z-Bra" was born!

That's cool, Mel

The name comes first, and then the design.  I think you are more of an artist who makes jewelry.  That is probably why your pieces are so creative and innovative.

Way cool, CoolCoolCoolCool

Great Topic!

Naming a piece is a process for me.  While I'm working on a piece, my creation takes on a life of its own, as we've discussed before.  If I'm working a theme then I try to discover its name to move along with the flow of creativity I'm expressing.  Right now my themes are Gaelic in flavor, like Beloved or "Ionúin" (pronounced  I-ON-yew-in) and I love that! (Sometimes they're hard to pronouce but the more practice I get the more I like the language- LOL!) or the feeling I'm getting while I'm creating, like ""

Other times when I'm in a more industrial mood, I move to oxymorons like "Soft Bricks" or "Quiet Chaos."  Sometimes I just get the idea of a name in my head and it won't be quiet until I've settled on using it.  I'm thinking this is just my Muse speaking to me. ...noisy thing!

I also know of forums that members publish their photos and ask for suggestions.  That way, naming your design doesn't have to be a burden...it can be a way of staying connected with your fellow designers and you get a little help, too.

How do you name your design

Some things I name, others I don't.

When I'm doing a piece of jewelry (doll or full size) for sale, I try to come up with some sort of name so that it can be ordered again.  This is especially true for the doll jewelry.  I got myself a book of Irish baby names, and pick out names I like that seem to fit the piece I've made.

If I'm just making something as a gift, I don't bother with a name.  I just take a picture and make a note of who I made it for.

I am a non namer also... so my pieces are blue and clear crystals or pink and purple crystals.  But my 9 year old daughter on the other hand names every one of her pieces.

Using Ladies names

I use female names for my pieces.  Sometimes I'll name the piece after a celebrity (I have a classic set in crystal, black crystal, and jet named Audrey after Audrey Hepburn's classic style) or a person I know (I named a pair of earrings after my SIL because the green matched her eyes) otherwise I just pick name that I think fits the personality of the piece.  It's nice because almost everything has a single word name, which makes it easier to print price tags, and when writing out receipts.  I don't usually name items that are for gifts & personal use unless I plan on re-creating them for my business.  I want to keep as many names available as possible!

I've noticed that I have certain letters that I use really often, so sometimes I'll try to pick a name starting with a letter that's rarely used, just to keep my item list balanced.  My most common letters are "A" names (11 items/sets) and "C" names (10 items/sets).
