Glueing Flatbacks

Ok, a few people have asked re the best glue to use for adhering flatbacks onto leather. Having experimented with both leather & suede I would recommend a 2 part epoxy resin for leather. Before applying I would sand/file the section of leather you want the crystal to adhere to. Then I would apply a very small amount of epoxy to the back of the flatback, if you apply too much it will bleed out from under the crystal and look very messy. In order to do this I use a long wooden skewer with a bit of blue-tac on the end. This allows me to pick up the crystal on the sparkly side, dot the glue on the rear and then carefully place it on the material. I use another clean skewer to gently puch the crystal down and into place.

When it comes to genuine suede as well as ultrasuede I usually use the hot-fix crystals with the tool - they stay on just fine.

If I want to attach a larger flatback to shiny plastic/metals then I usually attach the crystal to a small piece of ultrasuede then I stick it onto the plastic/lucite/metal. The ultrasuede ensures a much stronger bond - I use a 2 part epoxy for this as well.

Please feel free to share your methods of affixing flatbacks to various objects...

GLUING FLAT BACKS

Having just finished my piece "Tzarina's Faberge Treasure", putting hot fix flat backs onto egg shell, I found it difficult.  I originally bought a hot fix tool but it did not work for me on the egg and the variety of sizes all the time did not help either.  I ended up gluing each one individually using a jewel setter (small wand with sticky end).  I basically used "G-S Hypo Cement" for it.  It is in a small tube with a needle end for an applicator spreading it in small areas at a time.  Worked well.

Good to know

Thanks for that Noel....I'm currently hot fixing & using epoxy resin to affix flatbacks onto leather. I've tries GS & E600 but they are not strong enough, crystals can "ping" off after drying. So far a two part epoxy seems to work the best....maybe Swarovski should make a special glue to sell with flatbacks. I know there is a website in Germany called "Bling My Thing" that's sells a specially formulated glue...any ideas Admin?

Glue I research on

I am also looking for glue that are best suitable for crystals.  I search online and this is want I find, E6000 industrial strength epoxy, no mixing needed, and dries clear.  I hadn't try this glue, but will locate a store where I can purchase one to try.

glue

E6000 and GS Hypo Cement are pretty good and inexpensive.

CG 500-35 is the glue made by Swarovski, I have not used it.

We had discussed it on the forum before.  I found this vendor

in Hong Kong that sells it. Maybe you can buy, try it and let

us know?

Hope it's ok for me to post this link, since it is a Swarovski

product.

Swarovski CG500-35..the best but hard to work with!!!

I have seen your problems here, I work since a while with Swarovski Glue....It took a long time, but finally I learned to work with it (I have big earrings in my 2009 collection, and all the fancy stones are caughted with glue )...and it is the best, if you use it right!   I bought it in 1 kg from Wattens, and put 100 ml from A & B component in separat little phial, that's make easier to use when you need to mix little quantities!

I newer mix more than 4 ml  for once!!!!

------I  mix  the 2 parts  exactly 1:1  (measured with syringe from the farmacy)

----- I newer beginn to glue imediatly..NEWER!, I let the glue aprox 1 h dry.

-----You can take a headpin, and extend the glue on the surface you want to glue the flatbacks, - very thin!!! BUT NEVER extend the 100% surface you want to cover with crystals, and before you finish ,  take the crystals into the glue and than push them on the outsides togedher with the glue, and only than cover the last inside of the wanted surface!!!  I glued ss3 and ss5 Flatbacks on bigger pendants, it looks amazing, I try to insert some pictures, or you can access the link:

ah..1 Thing to add:

The "pick up" method for these small crystals is very easy:

------- moisturize with saliva a spagetti stick (1-2 mm diameter)- all the romanian Dance-Costume designers are working with this method- it is easy and is working 100%!!!! -the best pick-up -method for small flatbacks!!!!

I ensure You......I work with spahetti since years...Wink but don't eat it  uncooked....

Best regards,

Edith

I've never heard of using spagetti! Wow, it does make sense though. Thanks for sharing, Edith!

Glue for fine silver

Hello everyone,

After reading all your comments on the diferent glues that you use, I'm still unsure of which will be the best for a project that I'm beginning. The project I'm starting on will be in silver metal clay (fine silver) and I'm looking for what will be the best. Edith, you said that you use the CG500-35 for your jewelry and that it works well. Are your errings in metal or in silver? I imagine if the CG500-35 works on one it will workon the other. Has anyone ever glued flatbacks on silver before? Does anyony have an idea of which glue would work with silver? Admin, do you know if the CG500-35 works with gluing on silver?

In advance, thank you for your response and ideas.

Cordially,

Kenem (Kenji)

Glue on Silver

Hi Kenji!  Good to see you back here again.

I have used 2-part Epoxy to glue onto silver, gold and rhodium with no problem at all.  I expect it will also work with any of the metal clays after they have been fired.  As CG500-35 is a 2-part Epoxy, and is, of course, recommended by Swarovski.

The surfaces, of course, should be well prepared, clean & roughed up a bit.

I LOVE what you are doing with Swarovski elements and metal clays.  I think you are on the cutting edge of new technologies, and new design possibilities!  Can't wait to see you get a book deal, sir!

Sparkles and smiles,

Diane
