A friend of mine is on a three-month around-the-world cruise (sounds delightful, doesn't it?) and while at sea she frequently sits and beads where she can chat with passers-by. These are some of the questions that have been put to her:
What kind of glue are you using? This is put together with thread. What kind of glue do you use?
What kind of form is inside that? No form, it is all hollow inside. Well, what kind of form is inside?
Are you donating that to the silent auction? No, I am making it for myself to wear. Are you going to donate it?
While these questions show curiosity among her fellow passengers, it also shows us how little the wider population knows or understands about the world of beads beyond stringing them and what a great opportunity we have when we are working on beadwork in public.
At least she didn't get the comment my friend got, "Gee, if you make them in red and green, you could sell them at Christmas."
or, the most often heard one....
"How long does it take you to make that?"
Be patient, that person could get hooked on beads just like you and I!
